Revisiting “Thor’s Helmet”
Domey McDomeFace’s days are numbered, I’m afraid! Our property is up for sale, and hopefully its new owner will continue to use it to produce amazing images of their own. Meanwhile, I’m taking advantage of every clear night I can, while we’re still here.
Here’s one of my favorite objects: “Thor’s Helmet” or NGC2359. Like the Bubble Nebula, it’s formed by a hot star blowing out the gases around it. It’s a Southern hemisphere object, and so a little tough to capture even from Florida. This image represents 2 nights’ worth of data, but still only about 12 hours of total integration time as it’s not high enough in the sky for much of the night.
But I’m loving the detail I was able to capture on this run. The gear was on its best behavior, tracking flawlessly both nights.
